with Andrea Künzig and Claudia Wiens
Thursday 15th to Monday 19th May 2014

The essence of this workshop is to help participants find their creativity with the camera in an unfamiliar environment. In this course, photographers will get professional support to discover and improve their own visual language and to develop a photographic ‘story’. The workshop is aimed at advanced amateurs, photo students and professionals. We will offer ideas, but encourage the development of own themes, drawing from the abundant, visual wealth of Istanbul.

The workshop is designed for participants to use any type of photographic equipment or format – analogue and digital cameras, or even smartphones. Daily meetings with the whole group will take place to discuss results and strategies in a private space in Beyoglu (European side of Istanbul). The meetings will also be a useful forum for us to share our relevant experiences in the production of photo books, arranging exhibitions and undertaking reportage, street and art photography.

Core issues to be explored are as follows:

  • Where do my photographic interests lie?
  • What are the strengths in my photography?
  • How do I connect through photography to people without speaking the language?
  • How do I maximise the quality of my work in an unfamiliar place?

For those who wish, professional photo print facilities are available locally, who we have worked with successfully before.

It is worth making note of the political events that are now taking place in Turkey since the Gezi Park protests during the summer of 2013. Due to the large amount of uncensored information that emerged from social media, the widespread circulation of news led to a formerly unheard of dialogue internationally and also in Turkish society. Further demonstrations cannot be ruled out, but they have mostly been restricted to specific locations and can easily be avoided should there be any concern.
